Fiordland

A hauntingly beautiful world of wild valleys, soaring mountains and startlingly blue water – that’s Fiordland National Park # [map], New Zealand’s biggest and most spectacular. The region remains sparsely populated and, in parts, virtually unexplored. Thriving fur-seal colonies attracted some of the earliest European settlers here. The region is so remote that rumours of ‘lost’ Maori tribes, never encountered by Europeans, persisted until the 1950s, as did reports of surviving moa birds.

Magnificent Milford Track

The Milford Track, winding through varied and spectacular high country, is one of the world’s greatest walks. New Zealanders try to experience it at least once in a lifetime. Safety regulations ensure people walk in one direction only, as passing on narrow stretches can be slippery. Each year, some 14,000 people complete the five-day, 55km (34-mile) bush walk – yet there are no crowds. If you choose a guided walk, you carry only immediate necessities, staying at comfortable lodges each night.

Walking the track is an undulating and sometimes steep journey past glacier-sided mountains and turquoise lakes, through fields of Alpine wild flowers, veils of mist and forests that seem suspended in the era when plants were the only life on earth. Each day provides different scenery, from Alpine herb fields to rocky mountain passes. There are no vehicles or roads. The loudest sound is the sighing of the wind and the raucous call of the kea, the world’s only Alpine parrot.
